Beating the Heat: Cool Summer Activities in La Paz, Mexico
Yes, summer in La Paz can be scorching hot, but don't let the rising temperatures dampen your spirits!
The months from June to September are generally considered to be the "hot season" in the state of Baja California Sur, where La Paz is the capital. Daily temperatures hover in the mid-high 30C/90F range, and the UV index definitely warrants sunscreen and avoidance of direct midday sun.

But, with a mix of indoor escapes and refreshing outdoor experiences, you can still enjoy this fantastic city while staying comfortably cool. Here are 5 of my favourite ways to beat the heat during the summer months in La Paz:
1. Cinepolis: A Cinematic Escape
When the sun is blazing outside, seek refuge in the air-conditioned comfort of Cinepolis, a popular movie theater chain in La Paz. Catch the latest blockbusters while enjoying the chilled atmosphere. Three different locations around the city offer movies in Spanish, English or dubbed/subtitled.
Pro tip: Avoid the notoriously long and slow concession lines by either bringing your own sneaky snacks or arriving plenty early to grab refreshments before the show. You can also purchase your movie tickets online ahead of time to speed up your entry to the theater.
2. Relaxation at La Concha Resort Beach Club
La Concha Resort's new beach club is a hidden gem for beating the heat. Open to the general public at the time of writing, for a minimum spending amount at the on-site restaurant & bar visitors gain access to the fresh-water pool and seaside lounge facilities.
The expansive grounds are a tranquil oasis with comfortable beach chairs nestled under shaded umbrellas and swaying palm trees. The glistening waters of both the large rectangular pool and the Sea of Cortez just beyond it offer options for taking a refreshing dip. Historically reserved for guests of the hotel, the new La Concha Resort Beach Club is an excellent way to enjoy a luxurious day while staying cool by the water.

3. Espíritu Santo Island Adventure
Escape the city's heat entirely by embarking on a tour to Espíritu Santo Island. The shaded boat ride alone is a welcome respite. As you sail towards the island, feel the cool mist from the ocean refreshing your skin, providing relief from the warm temperatures.
Upon arrival at Espíritu Santo Island, you'll have the opportunity to engage in a variety of aquatic activities. Snorkel in the crystal-clear waters and discover the vibrant marine life that resides beneath the surface. Glide through the waves in a kayak or on a paddleboard, exploring hidden coves and pristine shorelines.
Shade is always provided on the white sand beaches you'll visit, and cold beverages and fresh ceviche lunch will be served to you while you lounge. The island's natural beauty and refreshing water fun make it an ideal escape from the summer heat.
Note: island tour descriptions may mention swimming with whale sharks and/or sea lions, but these activities are seasonal and not generally available during the summer. Island tours during these months will simply take you to spend longer time at the many beaches, coves and snorkeling reefs, as well as you'll have more free time to cruise around sightseeing from the shade of the boat.

4. Explore Museums and Galleries
Take advantage of La Paz's cultural scene by visiting museums and galleries. Not only will you learn about the region's history and art, but you'll also escape the sun's intensity. The Museum of Anthropology and History and The Whale Museum are just a couple of options to consider.

5. Sunset Sailing
Opt for a sunset sailing experience on the Sea of Cortez. The late afternoon breeze combined with the breathtaking views of the setting sun creates a magical and comfortable environment that helps you forget about the daytime heat

So, as you can see staying cool in La Paz during the hot summer months is entirely possible with the right activities and mindset! Whether you're enjoying air-conditioned entertainment, lounging at a beach club, or exploring the marine paradise of the local islands, these 5 options offer a balance of relaxation and adventure while beating the heat.
